The word that keeps coming back to me with this collection of quilts is
TEXTURE!!
A structure of interwoven fibers or other elements.
The distinctive physical composition or structure of something,
especially with respect to the size, shape, and arrangement of its parts:
Distinctive or identifying quality or character:
The quality given to a piece of art, literature, or music by the interrelationship of its elements:
To give texture to, especially to impart desirable surface characteristics to
Take this last photo for instance. Look past the quilt in the middle,
and see the layers of texture from the many quilts you can see.
l just might think TEXTURE is my new favorite word!!

Thanks for visiting,

Oh Linda, what wonderful photos, thank you for sharing. I have to think of the word passion. The passion of the quilt makers, the passion of the collector, the passion the colour red invokes. I could go on, I better not.
ReplyDelete"Magical" That's my word;to have one person take such care of all these treasures that have no real connection to her, and then for her to share them with us, well, it was just Magical! Then I saw someone post "it was Woodstock for quilters" I chuckled with that comment. I've been home a week, and I"m still in complete awe of the exhibit and all the photos. And to think we will be brought right back to these days when the book is published.
ReplyDeleteLinda your photo's of the show are fabulous, thank you so much for taking the time to put them up for us all to enjoy. I am getting a sense of what it must have been like to see it all in person...totally awe-inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI have viewed the posts a few times to take it all in, magnificient :-)
I can't believe how splendid these quilts are. Your photos are excellent. I am enjoying them thoroughly. If I could only choose one word it would be splendour.
ReplyDeleteI have said it before but when I walked in the room I was completely overwhelmed with EMOTION and WONDERMENT.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos Linda, Just imagine how much your 1000 photo's would have cost to get developed had we still been using film!

ReplyDeleteIncredible is the word that keeps coming to my mind.
ReplyDeleteI can see how Texture is your word though...the layers and layers of quilts was amazing...it was hard to focus on the one quilt in front of you when another was poking out the side you wanted to go see, it didn't matter it was across the room!
Incredible hand quilting, incredible designs, incredible quilts, incredible display, incredible generosity of Johanna s. Rose and her family for sharing her collection with us and NYC, for me I was just in awe! I felt like Sue completely overwhelmed with emotion and awe the two days I spent at the armory....its so hard to describe to someone who wasn't there...your pictures though bring anyone right there.
they can experience a part of what we did.
Thanks I am still trying to process what I saw!
Kathie
just gorgeous ! :))
ReplyDeletein the last week I've seen a lot photos of this exhibition. I noticed that there are no Red/White Block Sampler. Is it so ? And Why ?
greetings and best wishes
Kat :)
Definately "UNBELIEVABLE"!!!! thank you so much for sharing your photos with us. It must have been amazing to see them all in the flesh.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! Thank you for showing the texture of this FABULOUS exhibit. What a dream to see them in person.
ReplyDeleteI would have a hard time putting it all into one word. Amazing comes close to describing it for me, but it was so much more.
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing your photos.
Awesome is the word I'd use. I wasn't lucky enough to visit in person but, from all the pictures I've see, I'd say absolutely awesome, as in awe-struck, filled with awe and amazement. Thanks for sharing so many beautiful pictures!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful summary Linda. I think we took and are enjoying many of the same photos. I too am still trying to process it...Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures, a few aha moments looking at them to say Oh , yeah now I remember seeing that one. It was a great exhibit, and I was so glad to see it, and am enjoying everyones thoughts and pictures.
ReplyDeleteThankyou so much for sharing your photos for those of us who couldn't be there. Fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteThere are some unusual quilt designs mixed among the traditional. For instance, the chain links. How does someone think of a design like that!
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are fabulous. Balance of beauty fantastic!
It was incredible, wasn't it!! Genius is the word for the installation, and Generous is the word for Joanna and her husband.
ReplyDeleteLinda, Thanks for stopping by my blog- I love seeing what stood out to others who attended the show- there was just so much to take in and I only had a couple of hours to marvel in the experience.
Karen, in your comment you mentioned the chain links- that is the symbol for a fraternal organization, The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, which originated in England in the 1700 and came to the US in the 1800s. The 3 links stand for Friendship, Love, and Truth. From what I've read about them, it's likely the quilts were made by the women's organization, Daughters of Rebekah.
Thank you for such a great post!! Texture is a brilliant description!!!! My brain tends to react in awe when I see these photos and all I can come up with is ... WOW!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing. Your photos are beautiful and your sentiment breathtaking!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your photos Linda. This display of quilts was truly wonderful! I think many of us will be leaving those open spaces for quilting to show on our future projects. The relief of the quilting is what I am enthralled with. Love the ones that are about 50/50 between the red and the white. Just stunning!
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking so many great photos and for sharing them with those of us who couldn't travel to NY! You said the exhibit brought the word TEXTURE to your mind. I am mesmerized by its spacial dynamism....the whirlpool of the spiral movement. Yes, mesmerized! Rather like the looking at whirling dervishes. The set-designer has set the bar high for the next exhibit!!

Thank you! Gosh, I'd never have been able to see them otherwise. The exhibit's design and the quilts themselves ... well ... it's all just so amazing. Your photos are very good, and it's great to be able to study the quilts closely. Again, thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat's your favorite word to describe this exhibit?
ReplyDeleteHISTORICAL
This event in time will not happen again so it is historical.... parts may happen again but not the entirety. The presentation was original.... I look to see new "ways" quilts will be hung at some shows....
I have been like a sponge reading and viewing all I can about this event. Thank You for sharing your thoughts, pictures, insites and time - you have added to my enjoyment as well.
